Event Review
Frisbee freestylers from across Italy, Holland and America competed on the beach at Corallo Beach in Ostia at the 2008 Italian Open.
Several of the worlds top ranked players were in action including current world champion Tom Leitner, and 2007 world champ Antonio Piccioni Cusma from Milan.
Taking top honors in the pairs division was Edoardo Favorini from Rome, who teamed with Tom Leitner from Santa Cruz, California.
In the co-op division local Romans Lorenzo Apriani (also the tournament director) and Fernando Botrugno (the Frisbee Class teacher) also teamed with Tom in taking the Co-op title.
In the mixed division Lorenzo Apriani and Fabiana Ciciriello of Rome tied with Carlo Perrone and Cristina Nicolardi from Puglia to share the title.
The weather was a bit challenging on Saturday as strong winds - up to 22 mph - pushed the disc and the players had to really work to keep
the disc at the right angle. But even under these extreme conditions perhaps the routine of the event was turned in by Paolo Mirabelli, Alessandro
Damiano and Mauro Mercuri - they made several senstational co-ops and acrobatic catches in the strongest wind of the weekend.
On Sunday, the wind calmed for the finals and the players responded raising their level of play to new heights.
About Freestyle
The foundation of the sport of freestyle frisbee is based on what freestylers call 'moves'. A move is usually a series of tricks which
can involve spinning, tipping, brushing and rolling the spinning disc. These moves are combined together to make a 'combo' (combination) of moves.
Each 'combo' receives a difficulty and artistic rating. Combos can include 2 or more players passing the disc back and forth or just one player doing a solo.
Freestyle 'combos' are also intregrated with the music as part of the routine's choreography which can add to the artistic rating of the performance.
In the finals the routine last 4 to 5 minutes.
The challenge is for teams to try to do the most difficult moves with the fewest drops while presenting a professional and entertaining choreography
to judges and the audience.
